Today in pet stores there is a large amount of cat food. The question is which of them is the best, most likely, at some point each owner has a question.
Most likely, a definite answer to this question does not exist. The fact of a huge number of types and brands on the market suggests that there is the same number of different nuances and opinions.
Feed your pet what suits you and your pet. Do not change the brand too often, but do not be afraid to make a replacement in search of what suits your pet best.
Some cheap feeds can actually cause health problems.
But even if you feed your cat expensive, special food prescribed to you by a veterinarian, carefully read the composition and compare it with a good brand that is sold in most pet stores. You may be very surprised at the price difference. Unfortunately, it’s not always possible to get what you paid for!
Canned or dry food for cats?
The choice between canned food and dry food depends largely on convenience and preference.
Even if you hold your breath when you spread the contents of cat’s canned food in a bowl, most cats love this, in human opinion, unsightly mass. In addition, the high nutritional value of high-quality canned food will allow the animal to get enough of less food.
Open canned food should be stored in the refrigerator. The remains of canned food from the refrigerator should be warmed to room temperature. Dry food does not need to be stored in the refrigerator and heated, it does not spoil for a long time and is much cheaper compared to canned food.
Sufficient clean water is an important component of feline well-being.
The water bowl should always be clean and the water in it should be changed at least 2 times a day.
Cats fed canned foods drink less than those who eat dry food.
The availability of dry food throughout the day so that the cat can eat when it feels hungry, in addition to convenience, has a drawback. Cats often overeat with boredom.
An alternative to “free feeding” is regular feeding. Two or three times a day at set intervals.
Feed your cat always in one place, quiet and away from the cat’s toilet. Leave the food for 15 to 30 minutes, then remove the bowl.
Feeding a cat is a little more difficult if more than one animal lives in the house. This is due to the fact that the tastes and habits of cats can vary greatly, for example, they can eat different foods. Each cat should have its own bowls (for food and water).
Start feeding with the slowest eater and end with the fastest.
Decisively suppress an attack on someone else’s bowl of a fast eater.
Treating in addition to regular food does not harm the animal, but can also serve as a useful training tool.
However, it is important that this treat is healthy and not too frequent. Know the measure otherwise the cat may get fat.
Do not feed the cat with human food. For example, fish is not only rich in unsaturated fats (which can cause metabolic problems in cats) but also contains a significant amount of vitamin E, which is a certain concentration in the cat’s body that can cause a negative skin reaction.
It is best to buy treats specifically for cats at the pet store.
Be careful with milk. Many adult cats do not tolerate lactose. And if you still want to give the animal milk, first try to give a little and observe the reaction, if there are signs of intestinal upset, then milk is contraindicated for your pet.
In most cases, if you feed your cat good quality food and in recommended amounts, while the animal is quite active, then the cat will have ideal weight. But if your pet is well recovered or vice versa has lost weight, it is time to act.
Perform a simple test for the normal weight of your pet. Examine its ribs, if they are clearly marked, then the animal is underweight. If the ribs are not palpable, then obesity occurs.
You can also look at your pet from above. The protruding sides are a sign of overweight, and the inverted ones indicate thinness.
Obesity is the most common nutritional problem, but it can be easily corrected. In many cases, switching to a high-fiber, low-fat diet and dietary regimen will be sufficient.
Introduce new food gradually, a sharp change in food for an obese cat can lead to fat accumulation in the liver and, as a result, to liver failure.
Along with a change in nutrition, it will be useful to interest the lazy cat in active games.
If the cat is too thin and has no health problems, feed him a good feed. It doesn’t matter if your cat turns his nose from the bowl from time to time, but the constant refusal of food is another story.
If this is due to the transition to a new feed, introduce a new food into the diet even more slowly.
Some cats simply do not like diversity in food and wait when they are offered their favorite dish.
Do not wait for the cat to get used to a new food, better feed the animal with its usual food.
Do not let the animal stay without food for more than 24 hours.
Remember, refusal of food can be a signal of a serious illness, requiring immediate attention to the veterinarian.
